Document Summary

H-g societies didn"t know anything about genetics, breeding and inheritance but they knew a lot about local plants and animals. Their diets included 157 species of plant and so they knew what was safe to eat and what wasn"t. The first types of domestication were unconscious as the species were almost asking to be domesticated. Wild emmer shatters and disperses seeds whereas domesticated emmer is shatter resistant and therefore, holds seeds for farmers. Yields of wheat are very high and so this provided a stable source of food throughout the year. Harvesting and transporting automatically selects for shatter resistant forms of the wild emmer and also tends to select for the largest grains. When this food is stored, this leads to some seeds escaping and so wheat will begin to grow in the human"s settlement. The decision was eventually then made to actively re-plant these locally harvested seeds rather than having to travel longer distances to harvest them.
