Physiological significance: mast cell ige mediated anti-parasite infection. Pathological manifestation: mast cell ige reaction to common harmless antigen. Starts with sensitization (primary immune response): allergen phagocytosed and presented to cd4+ t helper cells. Activated cd4+ t helper cells activate b cells that have bound the allergen -> Mast cells have specific receptors for the fc part of ige. T memory and b memory cells are formed. Re-exposure (secondary): mast cells coated with ige bind to allergen -> activates release of histamine by mast cell. Consequences: anaphylactic shock -> massive histamine and cytokine release - Hygiene hypothesis: lazy immune system due to lack of exposure during childhood.
