Virus which targets the immune cells of human beings. Azt is the first anti-hiv therapy drug developed. Charts the patterns of ancestor descendant relationships between any groups of organisms. Viruses don"t fall into this tree of life. Ex: hiv is a retrovirus with it"s nucleic acid being rna. Hypothesis: single cell, over revolutionary time became stripped cell and became a parasite (cell-based life lost its independent metabolism) Sometimes evolution is reductive and makes organisms more simpler. Hypothesis: virus is a section of dna or a transposon (mobile genetic element gained ability to enter/exit cells) We don"t know if viruses are older or younger than cellular life. Should be younger since they require a cell host. We don"t know if there"s one origin or multiple origins. Cycle 1 - why is evolution true page 1.
