Threats tend to be faceless financial crises, diseases. However, having a neighbor looking to destroy you takes away the faceless-ness: sketchy neighbors you are unsure if they are a threat or not. Conspiracy theories create very strong and real paranoia. It is the fear that people around you have a secret plan to destroy you and take over your life: these theories tend to be relatively mainstream. They begin in the age of enlightenment 1600 and 1700s. The enlightenment movement was created in opposition of old hierarchies which were accepted blindly. Before the enlightenment, people tended to blame things on divine retribution but after, they were more likely to blame things on themselves. Conspiracy theories are easy to comprehend and are intellectually satisfying they make sense of things very quickly. It"s constant through time and space: the conspiracy is always large and complex and seems to be controlling everything around life.
