What is Organizational Behaviour?
Talks about attitudes and behaviours at work
When you say, I don’t like my job you are forming an attitude about your job
Behaviour could be when you quit your job
Organization behaviour Defined as a field of study devoted to understanding,
explaining, and ultimately improving the attitudes and behaviours of individuals
and groups in organizations.
- Not until the 1920s that employees were really recognized as human
beings with particular attitudes, needs and social connections at work
- Textbook discusses main topics around performance and commitment
- We predict these two outcomes based on stress, motivation, leader
behaviours, and justice
Research in Organizational Behaviour:
Evidence base management approach we promote management of
employees in a way that incorporates best available scientific findings in making
decisions
- Need to understand how to find good research
- How to conduct good research
Theory is a set of assertions about how and why variables are related
- They made not always be accurate as they are simply one’s proposed
understanding how and why variables are related
Hypothesis Prediction about the relationship between variables
- We need to find ways to see if hypotheses are supported or not
Correlation Linear relationship between two variables
- Vary from -1.0 to 1.0
- Strong correlations are closer to 1.0
- Weak correlations are closer to 0
- Height and weight are positively correlated
- Negative correlation between absenteeism and job satisfaction
Usually we cannot draw firm conclusions based on study alone

Lesson 2:
Job Performance defined as employee behaviours that contribute either
positively or negatively by the accomplishment of organizational goals
- Job performance consists of behaviours not results
- Those behaviours can have positive or negative consequences
- A teacher might mark student papers quickly and with significant feedback
- That same teacher may be consistently late for work
3 Categories of Job Performance:
1. Task performance
- Employee behaviours involved in converting organizational resources into
goods/services
- The tasks and duties that is explicitly required of the employee by his/her
employer
- Is often determined through job analysis, with assistance from the National
Occupational Classification (NOC)
- Includes routine task performance, adaptive task performance, and creative
task performance
- E.g., a restaurant server might provide menus to customers, provide a list of
specials, and bring food to customers
2. Citizenship behaviour
- Voluntary employee behaviours that contribute to the organization by improving
the context, but are not within their job description
- Includes organizational citizenship behaviours (i.e., voice, civic virtue, and
boosterism) and interpersonal citizenship behaviours (i.e., helping, courtesy,
sportsmanship)
- E.g., a restaurant server might assist other servers with their tables and offer
constructive suggestions for improving the restaurant
3. Counterproductive behaviour
Employee behaviours that purposely hinder goal accomplishment in an
organization
