Ruled by the many in own interest/ruled in many for others interest. Influencing others" behaviour (getting people to do what you want) Attraction - agenda setting - getting other to want what you want-institutions, values, The right to punish those who disobey (locke) Hobbes thought experiment, imagine life without the state and political power. Man by nature is a political animal - aristotle. Powerful state is needed to avoid disastrous interpersonal conflict. Main premises: human nature (humans materialistic, felicity, vulnerable, reputation) Lack of trust: safety (attack before you get attacked) Glory: reputation (best defence is a good offence) Fundamental law: seek peace, if you can get it.
