People"s right to consent to who rules them; natural rights. Right of revolution: adam smith economic ideas of liberalism. John stuart mill politics and economics are intermixed. Individual relationship to society: private sphere separate from public sphere. Duties to society not to injure interests, bear a share of sacrifices/labour. Also a liberal feminist natural division of labour. Green humans are self-interested but not always in a bad way (common good) Positive freedom freedom to live as one chooses. A just society equal distribution of wealth. 2 principles: each person has equal right to basic liberties; inequalities must be in the greatest benefit for the least advantaged and fair in conditions to all. Classical conservatism: burke political basis of conservatism. Humans are ruled by passions and desires. Society is a living organism: society > individuals. Gov"t must be rooted in the customs/traditions of the people to be stable. Gov"t must limit the economic competition of capitalism to preserve society.
