Psych 2075 Chapter 4 Textbook Notes!
•SEXUAL ANATOMY! !
It used to be that people thought only physicians needed to
understand the workings of the body
Genital self image: our self esteem regarding our genitals; the way
we view them
This is affected by cultural norms (too big too small), by their
sexual experience (e.g. child abuse) or by medical conditions and
surgery
Alberta study found men who viewed porn had a more negative
view about their genitals
Men who are self conscious will hide their penis during sex
People getting vulva surgery to make their vaginas look more
erotic and prettier
Vaginoplasty = tightening the vagina
Hoodectomy =removing the clitoral hood
Labia minora practices
Pubis tuck = removing excess skin above the pubic area to elevate
the pubis
What is the Toronto Trim?
Reduction of the labia and clitoral hood
Men get cosmetic penis enlargements
They feel as though their genitals do not match the cultural ideal
Marketing of genital surgery promises better sex but does not warn
of consequences (e.g. infection, altered sensation, pain, adhesions
etc) !
!
The female sexual organs can be classified into two categories:
External vs internal organs
External organs include mons pubis, outer lips, inner lips, etc
All together called vulva (cunt, crotch, pussy) - the external
"vagina"

The clitoris incredibly important in female sexual response
The glans of the clitoris is found by the vagina and the rest go
deeper inside
Homologous to the male's genital organs cause come from similar
tissue before birth
*the clitoris is unique in that it is the only part of the sexual
anatomy with no known reproductive function
The mons pubis is patch of skin that has pubic hair on it on the
top
The labia; the outer lips are the major lips that carry hair and inner
lips do not carry hair and are inside of it
Sometimes the inner lips are folded over until they are spread
apart
These are all important in sexual stimulation and arousal
The Bartholin glands are found inside the inner lips (two tiny
glands on either side) and are only of interest cause they can get
infected
The urinary opening (the urethra) lies halfway between the clitoris
and the vaginal opening
The area of skin between the vagina and the anus is called the
perineum
The area enclosed by the inner lips is called the vestibule
Contains the opening to the vagina and urethra
Well supplied with nerve endings
Women with vulvar vestibulitis have a very sensitive vagina – pain
can arise from things like biking or tampon and especially to
sexual penetration
The vaginal entrance is called the introitus
Female's external organs much less visible than males !
!
The Hymen is a thin membrane that covers partially the vagina
and is often structured or broken during first intercourse – the
cherry
A lot of fascination with this all over the world
