Objective view: presence of certain characteristics defining deviance. Statistical rarity, societal harm, societal reaction, normative violation. Subjective view: no shared, observable characteristics that defines what or who is deviant. Moral holiday (weekends at western, let off steam) Sets moral boundaries (change from one person to another) Mark bottom layer of society (people work hard to be above that, ie homeless) Warning sign (drug problems and school shootings) Deviance = eufunction accomodate acceptable deviance . Eufunction: going faster than speed limit on highway to keep up, there is lenience and acceptance. Dysfunction: going 140 when speed limit is 100, get pulled over to fix. Anomie: feeling of normlessness or absence of social regulation of behaviour, strain . Consensus over norms, values and beliefs in society. Most deviance is a dysfunctional characteristic in the social structure. Criticism: assesses consensus in society, ignores variables and differences among people. Excessive deviance messes up stability of society. Theory of deviance: innovators, ritualists, retreatists, rebels.
