Advertising tries to manipulate us into buying something, usually in ways that are more subtle than blatant deception. Issues concerning the advertising of harmful products, and the effect of advertising"s underlying message that consumerism and buying things is the way to be happy. Advertising began as a rational enterprise whose purpose was to convey information about a product or service and make claims in propositional form. In the 1890s, there was a shift in advertising to slogans, jingles, and photographic images. In the 1920s, advertising began to draw on psychology to influence consumer behaviour. Psychoanalytic theories of sigmund freud and behaviourist theories of john b. Freud saw humans not as rational beings, but as controlled by unconscious desires, often sexual in nature. Watson saw people as a stimulus-response mechanism which could be conditioned to behave in certain ways. Tv came in the 1950s, which => a medium attracting millions of viewers financed by advertising revenue.
