By the time one enters college, doing well is influenced as much by conscientiousness as intelligence. Individuals w strong need for achievement and relatively low weak fear of failure fair best. Boys who self handicap attribute poor performance to lack of effort whereas girls more likely to mention emotional problems. Mastery motivation: intrinsic, derive pleasure from learning, perform better/more confident. Performance oriented: extrinsic, achieve bc of rewards and fear. Stereotype threat: telling females they do worse on math tests results in them doing worse. 3 factors interact to predict behaviour in school: whether student believes intelligence is fixed or malleable, whether student is oriented toward performance or mastery, self efficacy (confidence in his or her abilities) Students who believed intelligence is fixed are oriented toward performance and are greatly affected by degree of confidence.
