Some students use self handicapping strategies like joking around in class, procrastination, turning in incomplete homework, or partying excessively night before exam as a way of self protection or to enhance self presentation. Boys who self handicap attribute poor performance to lack of effort whereas girls more likely to mention emotional problems. Perform better in school than performance oriented people. More confident about ability and to persist in face of failure. Drop in mastery motivation as they transition from elementary into secondary school in part bc teachers become more performance oriented.
