No child left behind act (bush): mandated states ensure that all students achieve academic proficiency, annual tests, opposite effect = pushed students out of school. Standards-based reform: held schools and students to predetermined set of standards, created incentives for states to develop exams w low requirements for passing. Problem of low student achievement concentrated mainly among poor and minority kids in inner cities. Rates of student victimization more likely in schools where student-teacher ratio is higher. Student engagement weaker in larger schools, ideal is 600-900 kids. In small schools its more likely all students are exposed to same curriculum. Process of separating students into different levels of classes w/i the same school is called ability grouping/tracking, kids in remedial track general receive worse education.
