School as means of social control; high school put idle young peple where they can be supervised. Also a way to make foreign born immigrants socialized to american way of life. Comprehensive high schools promised to meet needs of diverse/growing population of young people. Classes in general education, college prep, and vocational education all housed under one roof. Schools are important tools of social interventionl greatest number of young people can most easily be reached through it.
