The purpose of this report is to provide a spatial analysis of crime statistics at York University.
Crime statistics for the year 2012 have been analyzed, including sexual assaults, general assaults,
and robberies, using ArcGIS and have been correlated with safety parameters such as CCTV
Cameras and emergency blue phones. Based on data from this study, recommendations have
been generated in order to prevent and decrease the crime outbreaks on campus. The study area
has been explored in detail, and an attempt to analyze crime statistics at the university has been
performed. Results from this study will be integral in installing additional safety measures.

Introduction and Background
According to a recent article by CBC, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, the city of
Toronto in Canada is considered a safe place to live, although gun violence is on the rise. In
recent years, there is a spatial distribution in Toronto, where some areas are more affected by
criminal activity than others, and the city has become polarized (Mayer, 2012). Toronto, Canada
is home to four universities and several community colleges. The four universities that Toronto
is home to are University of Toronto (St. George and Scarborough campuses), York
University(Keele and Glendon Campuses), Ryerson University, and OCAD University. The
scope of this project will focus on crime statistics York University, at the Keele campus, which is
a significant area for a lot of crime activity in the city of Toronto, and is home to the third largest
university campus in North America. This report aims to focus on several types of crimes that
have occurred at the university, and create a spatial analysis of crime data and security data.
Statistics for the most recent year, 2012, have been used in order to show this correlation. As a
university campus, York University is a significant area of interest, and analyzing crime
distributions here could help with crime prevention and ensure greater campus safety.
The importance of analyzing crime statistics at York University is that recently, York
University has been the subject of many sexual assaults and thefts, and has been at the centre of
media attention (Urback, 2012). In September 2012, there were six reported sexual assaults in
one month. This is very unsafe for students and the campus community, and it is necessary that
preventative measures must be taken to try and stop crimes happening on campus. Therefore, the
objective of this report is to gather a map of the crime statistics that occurred at the university,
where they occurred in order to discern which areas of campus are safe and which need
improved safety measures, and compare these statistics with pre-existing safety measures such as
CCTV security cameras and emergency phones in order to find out whether these measures have
been effective or have a correlation on crime occurrences at the university.
Problem Statement and Objectives
The city of Toronto itself has the highest crime rate in Ontario and York University’s
Village is among those higher crime rate regions. However, York has been very active on student
safety which includes adding $ 535, 00 to the safety and the security budget each year as
mentioned in York University’s newspaper (Excalibur, 2013). An extra 25 security cameras were
installed in the year 2012. Due to the increased number of incidents and assaults on Keele
campus, Toronto police have increased the number of patrols within York’s borders since last
year (Sundardas, 2013).
Problem Statement
The purpose of this project is to perform a spatial analysis of the crime happening around
York University, Keele campus. The spatial data used for this project contains all the information
regarding the general assaults, sexual assaults and robberies happened on the Keele campus in
the previous year (2012). The spatial data obtained from the York’s security will be analyzed and
will suggest the best probable locations for the advanced security systems like blue light
emergency phones, indoor safety phones and campus intrusion alarm systems.
