The importance of gaining respect and building effective relationships with subordinates is highlighted in chapters 4,5 and 10. For most manager sin the book it is clear that establishing their credibility and authority is more difficult in senior organizations. Another theme that presented itself was self-knowledge as a manager. In the text chapters 3, 9 and 12 especially highlight the personal transformations that an individual must experience in order to become an effective manager.
