Monotheism ; belief in one god mono. Polytheism ; belief in multiple gods poly. When comparing religions we use the following framework: A religious ritual gives you access to myths, for example participating in passover you participate in the belief of the angel of death and the liberation of the jews. The eurachrist commemorates the last supper: doctrine/philosophical. Gods, dieties, beliefs: myth (derived from the greek word mythos means story, ethical/legal (moral code ie. the 10 commandments) Sets rules and standards for the religion. Institutional/social (social structure, the sociology of the religion) Catholic church has a strong hierarchy with the pope on top. Who has control, members of the religion: material/artistic (food, clothing, symbols, paintings) During pilgrammage to mecca, islams dress themselves in white cloth. Prayer beads, cross, statue of mother mary. Religions art--reinassance paintings, temples adorned with sculptures. Islam do not want visual representation of muhammad or god: experiential (gives the rest of the dimensions meaning)
