Used a new technique to find pluto. Used lowell"s telescope at lowell observatory in arizona. Had 2 images: one on left, one on right. Mirror in the middle that could switch between the 2 images really quickly. Notices one star" moved over a couple days. Large collection of rocky/icy objects that lie beyond neptune"s orbit. Contains: around 100,000 objects larger than 100km. Contains objects that are failed planets"(aka frustrated planet formation): Not able to grow large enough to become a true" planet. Too many planet fragments ( planetesimals ) competing gravitationally: no single large body was dominant, and grew into a planet: give the definition for (i) planet; (ii) dwarf planet, planet. Is in orbit around the sun: has sufficient mass for its self-gravity to overcome rigid body forces so that it assumes a hydrostatic equilibrium (nearly round) shape, has cleared the neighbourhood around its orbit, dwarf planet.
