Extremely depressed mood state that lasts at least two weeks and includes cognitive symptoms and disturbed physical functions to the point that even the slightest activity or movement requires an overwhelming effort. General loss of interest and inability to experience any pleasure (anhedonia: mania involves exaggerated elation, joy or euphoria. Find extreme pleasure in every activity, become hyperactive, require very little sleep and may develop grandiose plans, believing they can accomplish anything. Speech may be very rapid because they want to say so many things (flight of ideas) Requires a duration of only one week to be called mania. Could have hypomanic episodes which are less severe versions and do not cause social or occupational impairment, also last only four days. The structure of mood disorders: people who experience depression or mania are said to have unipolar mood disorder. Want to relieve the current feelings but also try to prevent future episodes.
