Democracy literally translates to rule of the people or poor ; it is a political form in which the people are sovereign. Democracy is the name of a political form in which the people are sovereign, in which the whole, rather than merely a part, rules the polity and hence itself. The clear-cutting of public goods, the checks on the market, and the most basic values of equal opportunity and access to public institutions threatens democracy. There are many theories of democracy, like direct, representative, liberal, etc. Democracy does not require absolute social and economic equality, but it cannot withstand large and fixed extremes of rich and poor that undermine the very possibility of legislating our lives in common.
