Intimate tie between the government of russia and the religion. Had to have this religion as part of your culture, otherwise you weren"t considered russian : form of government that is present, tsar controls an autocracy- kind of government that develops in russia-> it is a form of monarchy. Serfs: building homes, etc: didn"t have rights, didn"t make income, had to pay taxes on what they produced. Culture: catherine the great (1762-1796, similar to peter the great, wanted to make russia a much bigger empire and go to wars with its neighbors, 19th century- beginning of sig. Reforms: romanov: someone who is going to make significant kind of changes to. 40 years they would get repaid for the value of their serfs by the government (redemption payment: placed serfs on portions of land that the nobility had to give up. Peasant families now built their own homes on these lands (mirs- commune, peace).
