Calhoun and the south carolinians try to nullify the tariff-states have the right to declare federal law unconstitutional (after such and such dates, they will stop taking the tariff) This angers jackson because they are opposing a federal law. Henry clay works a compromise however: forced bill-gives jackson the right to enforce any law, begins the process of reducing the tariff. No other southern state supports calhoun"s proposal: fight over abolitionists petitions in the mails. Wrote up petitions and sent them to the south, but the mailmen refused to deliver them.
