Family as a social institution: set of relationships between at least 2 people related by birth, marriage, adoption, or long-standing ties of intimacy following the patterns of rule-governed behavior. Interdependence: members of relationship are mutually or equally dependent on each other (emotionally, financially, religion, and morally). Family vs. household: nuclear family: parents and children living under one roof. Household: one person living alone or a group of people who share living arrangements at the same address. Extended family: a family containing relatives in addition to the nuclear family. This is particularly common in minorities and immigrants (hispanics). Modified extended family structure: an extended family living apart, but communicates via facetime, skype, telephone, email. Family of orientation: refers to the family you were born into and raised in. Family of procreation: refers to the family we create when we get married and have children.
