Efficiency- best way to achieve a goal (means & end: predictability-familiarity, calculability- reducing everything to quantities, portion, size, time, & cost: substitution of nonhuman for human technology, control over uncertainty, ritzer + mcdonald"s is the epitome of rationalization, and its model is being adopted by other businesses. 1848- horace mann wrote education, beyond all other devices of human origin, is the great equalizer of the conditions of men. 1896- ussc decision in plessy v. ferguson established the separate but equal doctrine: effectively sanctioned jim crow laws (de jure-legal-racial segregation) 1954-ussc in brown v. board of education overturned plessy in regards to education: separate-but-equal is inherently unequal. Since the brown decision, the institution of education has been trying to achieve equal opportunity- race and beyond: ex: title ix: sex discrimination, ex: americans with disabilities act.
