Hobbs def. of the law: just a statute, commanding those things that are honest & forbidding the contrary . Beliefs: a mental representation of a sentient being"s attitude toward the likelihood or truth of something. Social construction: what a group of people think is to be true, enough people in an area believe in something, it becomes a law. Durkheim"s moral code- instill rights/wrong in the community from the communities school however something"s that violate our moral code, may not be illegal. Beliefs: in relation to the law: regulate how we behave depending on, culture, media portrayal, inform broader knowledge. Normative standards of right & wrong; varies from place to place: incest is wrong, murder is wrong etc. Beliefs different than values the connection between what we value & what we believe in.
