We are motivated to see ourselves as valued. Identity threat is triggered when there is a perceived possibility that a valued social identity is devalued in a setting. A reaction to performance demands in domains that stereotype one"s social category as inferior. Sits at the intersection of stereotyping and the self. Cultural stereotypes about certain groups" abilities in different domains. People also identify (to different extents) with particular domains. People who are highly identified with a domain and a group membership often show performance decrements when their group membership is made salient. Increases threat if given before rather than after test. Ex: being the only member of a group in a room. Fear of confirming negative stereotypes about their group. Definitely not the solution we are looking for. Leads people to attribute their anxiety/stress to the situation as opposed to their own performance. Correct responses were best at low salience.
