Document Summary

Personality is a set of psychological characteristics-thinking, feeling, & behaving- that differentiates us from others and leads us to act consistently across situations. To understand personality, you have to study the individual differences in personality traits: trait- a stable predisposition to act or behave in a certain way. Trait theories are different approaches to studying traits. The researcher attempts to identify the basic trait from among the thousands of personality descriptors that are common in language. Ex: on a scale of 1-7, how well does the term friendly describe you: then figure out how the trait ratings correlate with one another. Factor analysis helps identify basic personality traits but the main argument is about the number of factors that best characterize personality. Eysenck"s 3 factor theory: hans eyseneck used factor analysis to come up with his three factor theory, he settled on three superfactors or primary dimensions. Neuroticism- captures your degree of anxiety, worry, or moodiness.
