Paul MMW 12
(CQ)Paul was - A hellenized Jew and a zealous Jew
Temple for Aphrodite
1,000 temple prostitutes
Paul is looking for commercial cities
Because ppl are traveling in commercial cities and will spread the word
Spread word of christianity
Thinking about how to make christianity relative to Jews
Paul’s texts are the earliest texts in the new testament
Doesn't know Jesus or God
Was involved with stoning down one the first apostles
Violently wanted to persecute and destroy the house of God
Wanted to maintain the religion of his ancestors: a zealous Jew
Paul’s conversion story (Acts 9-11)
On way to Damascus, Falls off Ass and god speaks to him
Converts to Christianity!!!!! From saul to paul
People of faith didn't think he was a true Christian
“Don’t go to the gentiles, go to the house of the Jews
Not obvious that gentiles were going to be the audience
Peter has a vision which makes it clear that Gentiles are an appropriate audience
Peter was preaching to circumcised and Paul for the uncircumcised
Paul is teaching with the authority of the revelation of Jesus Christ → not a human
source
Goes to Rome (a major city with many people)
Paul is not interested in Jesus life on earth
Paul only thinks Jesus’s death and resurrection was important
That Jesus is the sacrifice that pays for our sins
Didn't think people had to follow Jewish laws
New religion (did not need to be circumcised or avoid pork)
(CQ)Paul thinks that keeping Jewish laws is helpful for salvation is wrong or sinful
If you think that you need to keep the law, it suggests that God’s sacrifice is not
enough.
“You who want to justify yourself by the law, means that you are cutting yourself
off from God’s sacrifice”
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law
Paul warns the people for the liberty to not live lawlessly and not to indulge in the flesh
Be led by the spirit; do not be misled by your freedom.
Paul “apostle to the Gentiles”
Faith vs. works [a new contract]
Grace vs. law [a new era]
Law cannot save us from sinning
We are all sinners, but Jesus saves us with his sacrifice of atonement
No benefit of being a Jew
Spirit vs flesh [new man vs old]

wants of the body are the opposite to the needs of the soul
Eating and sex can be holy only if done with the right rituals
PAUL says that we are in constant conflict with ourselves because we
constantly get hungry and horny but we cannot give into it!!!!
If you can not resist sexual drive, then just get married.
If a virgin, Paul's suggests (god didn't tell him about this) to stay as a virgin
Marriage is a distraction towards devotion to god
Allegorical vs. literal or historical reading of OT
Literal - History of the Jews
Allegorical - spiritual reading for the christians
Abraham had 2 sons, one with free woman and one with a slave woman
This is an allegory → one child is of flesh while one is of spirit
Child of slaves shall not share inheritance with free child
We are children of the free woman
Equating slaves with jews; and of the free woman with christians
Christians are the children of abraham of the promise; vs. the
children of the flesh (jews)
Free vs. Slave
^^^^
Christian vs Jew [Judaism is a problem, not an advantage]
Christians and Gentiles are both equal in god's eyes
Judaism has become negative
Paul is taking the texts made for Jews by Jews and applying it to the Gentiles
Taking all jewish rituals away and creating a new religion where all you
need is God and belief in jesus’s role as the messiah
Paul writes 30 years before matthew (first person to write in NT) ; and creates
Jesus’s role as the apocalyptic messiah
Matthew thinking in binaries like these because he is picking it up from -----
Let all other preached gospels be cursed!!!
Doing the work of satan
Some arguments among the early Christians
Should the JEwish laws be kept? How should we read the hebrew bible?
Is the Christian God a new god, replacing the Jewish God?
Are there 2 opposing Gods (angry vs. merciful)
Is Jesus purely human? Or purely divine?
Monophysite = one nature (human OR divine)
OR is Jesus both Human AND divine (dual nature)
Many divine figures appear as human
Can the Son of god = God the Father? Is the trinity 3 beings or just 1
Is Mary the mother of god or just of the human jesus? Is she an appropriate
object of worship, or is that idolatry?
***Each separate answer created a separate sect of Christianity; never became one unified
understanding of the new religion
