Document Summary

Molecular biology is the study of life at the subcellular level. Genetic engineering is the direct manipulation of genes for practical purposes. Plasmids are small extracellular pieces of dna found in bacteria and a few eukaryotes. Plasmids are responsible for most of the added functionality" (antibiotic resistance and ability to digest different sugars) in bacteria. A restriction enzyme is a bacterial enzyme that is used as the cutting tools for making recombinant dna. You have a plasmid and a usable piece of dna, creates matching ends, to fit together. Recombinant dna is a dna molecule that carries genes from two or more sources. It can be forced into a bacterial cell which is transformation. Dna cloning is the production of multiple identical copies of a gene carrying piece of dna. Create a usable plasmid, then put it into a bacterial cell, it makes millions of copies of that plasmid. Every bacteria is using that plasmid to make something.
