LING 3P51 Chapter Notes - Chapter 7: Interpersonal Relationship, Phonetic Transcription
Document Summary
Ling 3p51 chapter 7: clinical scoring and transcription. Age: younger kids have trouble understanding instructions; incomplete speech development leads to perceptually ambiguous sound production. Dialect: slp must learn the dialectical differences to see what is normal. Physical and personality differences: rate of speech, how open their lips are when they talk, voice quality, interpersonal relationship between client and clinician. Intelligibility (more likely to transcribe with errors if they know what the child is saying bc you"re biased) Linguistic context (the number and type of linguistic units (phonemes, syllables, words etc) in which the target linguistic unit is embedded. Successive judgements: if the first 9 /s/ sounds are judged correct, there would have to be a huge difference in the 10th /s/ to be judged wrong. Allows you to see the context in which the utterances occur.
