Chapter 5: assessment of kids with culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. Culture: what one needs to know/believe to function acceptably in a particular group. Slps make 2 mistakes: either they miss a disorder or are identified incorrectly as having one. Culture: they should educate themselves culturally in terms of whats appropriate for eye contact, facial expression, gestures, silence, etc. Dialects and language learning: slp should learn the contrastive influences of other languages that they serve. Interference: influence of one language on the learning of another. Positive attitude about self and own language and the target language. Parental attitude and level of literacy at home. There is a lack of appropriate assessment tools for bilingual children. Analyzing tests and procedures for content and style (ex. f may be excepted for th" in some dialects) Taking variables into account and changing assessment procedures. Selection: based on linguistic competences, ethical and professionalism, and general knowledge and personality.
