Document Summary

Motivation: motivation internal processes that initiate, sustain, direct, and terminate activities, needs vs. drive. Motivation starts with a need (an internal deficiency that may energize behaviour) Need causes a drive (the psychological expression of internal needs or valued goals; for example, hunger, thirst, or a drive for success) Drive activates a response (any action, glandular activity, or other identifiable behaviour) Drive pushes us to the goal (the target of motivated behaviour) Needs and drive can differentiate in their strength. Motivation can be a result of the pull of external stimuli, or the push of external needs. The pull of a goal is the incentive value (the value of a goal above and beyond its ability to fill a need) Goals high in incentives value can motivate behaviour in the absence of a need. Goals low in incentive value cannot motivate even when their is a need. Types of motivations: biological motive innate motives based on biological needs.
