There is not one accepted approach to understanding tourist motivation. Distinguished models using four themes: result of needs, relation to a centre, ladder/career, and combination of push and pull factors. Crompton distinguished motivations into several factors on page 80. By grouping tourist, different segments can be made, this is called segmentation. There are also limitations to grouping tourists with similar needs, attractions, and destinations. There is age difference which also affects this greatly, and segmentation does not apply to the whole scope of tourism. Cohen"s typology then specifies four types of tourists: organised mass tourists, individual mass tourists, explorers, and drifters. These would be on a spectrum of how independent in terms of an itinerary they were from left to right. Need recognition: aware of a need that they want to be met. Information search: search for information about products to ensure correct purchase decision. Evaluation of alternatives: compare number of potential products/services.
