Personality: individual unique constellation of consistent behavioural traits. Distinctiveness: behavioural differences among different people in same situation. Personality traits: disposition to behave a certain way in variety of situations. Factor analysis: correlations between variables as they are related to each other. If a number of personality traits correlate high with each other, than we can assume a single factor is influencing them all. Mccrae + costa five factor model: personality traits derive from 5 high order traits. Big 5: characterized as longitude + latitude where personality should be mapped. Extraversion(positive emotionality): outgoing, sociable, postive outlook, pursue intimacy. Openness to experience: curious, less prejudice, fosters liberalism, determines political attitude. High grades = conscientious -- divorce = neuroticism -- occupational attainment = conscientious + extraversion. Neuroticism = elevated mental illness conscientious = reduced morality + live longer. The psychodynamic approach (also called the psychoanalytic approach).
