Stress an experience we perceive as being beyond our ability to cope. Stress response physiological, cognitive, emotional and behavioural reactions. Stressors external events/situations that are potentially stressful. Primary appraisal evaluate how meaningful stressor is (benefit vs. harm and whether occurrence is relevant to that person"s goals). [evaluation of what is at stake for a person in a situation]. Secondary appraisal what can you do in this situation / fix it. [evaluation of what can be done in the situation, which depends on an individual"s resources, level of perceived control, & expectations regarding what is likely to occur in the future. Chronic stress ongoing and long-lasting: ex; ongoing harassment, relationship issues, and chronic pain. Acute stress sudden source of stress that lasts short term: can be big or small but not long-lasting. Ex: daily hassles: ex: pain/injury, mental/physical error, distracted by crowd. Expected stressor plan or prepare for it: ex: midterm exam.
