Document Summary

The populaion is the smallest unit of evoluion. Microevoluion change in allele frequencies in a populaion over generaions. Three main mechanisms that can cause allele frequency change: Natural selecion geneic drit (chance events that alter allele frequencies) gene low (the transfer of alleles between populaions) * only natural selecion consistently improves the match between organisms and their environment (adaptaion) Darwin realized that variaion in heritable traits was a prerequisite for evoluion. Geneic variaion diferences among individuals in the composiion of their genes or other dna segments. Phenotype is the product of an inherited genotype and many environmental inluences. Only the geneically determined part of phenotypic variaion can have evoluionary consequences. Characters that vary within a populaion can either be discrete or quanitaive, Discrete characters can be classiied on an either-or basis (each plant has lowers that has either purple or white). Many discrete characters are described by a single gene locus with diferent alleles that produce diferent phenotypes.
