Dominant models of emo typically conceptualize the stimuli that elicit emos as independent of each other, w properties that make them either desirable or undesirable, but not both western (ind self) *actual shaped more strongly by inherited temp vs ideal = cultural factors. Euro ams & asian ams reported valuing high-activation posi affect (ex excitement) more than chinese. Hong kong chinese reported valuing low-activation posi affect (ex calm) more highly than ams. Ind perception that self and its well being = independent from other ppl coll perception that self is defined in large part by one"s relats & grp memberships. Euro ams preschool kids preferred excited (vs calm) smiles & acts & perceived an excited smile as happier than chinese preschoolers. + at least 2 distinct types of collectivism exist. Cultural scripts cult norms that influence how ppl expect emos to be experienced & regulated.
