Every social system hale interacted with attempted to control hale"s personal experience of identity. Genitals are so important in our society because they help everyone identity who you are. If you have a penis, people know that you are a male. This represents the extent to which the medical industry has taken hold of our society. People are not concerned with feelings of gender, but rather the ease in which they can classify you into a particular gender category. For humans who have an innate desire to classify everything in order to understand it, people with identify with no gender or both genders become confusing, and whatever confuses us also frightens us. Having only two ways to represent gender makes it easier for others to go about their daily lives, and since science/medicine has only biologically defined two genders, people who identify differently are deemed abnormal or pathological. Many assault victims cited fear as a response to not reporting.
