Some people are subjected to measures of social control, those that are labelled deviant. Once a person, behaviour, or characteristic is perceived as unacceptable. Sometimes measures of social control are formal, implemented through an official mechanism that carries out some institutionalized authority - workplace dress code that you must conceal all tattoos and piercings. Informal measures of social control at the level of everyday social interaction - being bullied for being a geek . Some forms of social control are intended to punish, cure, or fix (formal or informal); these occur after a deviant behaviour or characteristic has been detected - receiving a speeding ticket. Other forms of social control are intended to prevent devience from happening in the first place - dare program. We are all subject to measures of social control everyday. Deviance refers to those people, behaviours, or characteristics that are perceived as unacceptable.
