Some suggest fundamental traditions/philosophies should b pinned down 2 better preserve them--but this is impossible. Change itself is central to many traditional stories. Beadwork/baskets/quillwork provide rich contexts for artists to work in. Not drawn to the process of making itself, but to the connotations re: identity that. 11/10 doxtater, basket, bead, and quill, and the making of traditional art. Perception in western society/among some indg ppls that indg culture is being lost and these objects/artforms hold. Engaging in these traditions is abt evoking the thought/doing knowledge, not dictating a narrative or defining knowledge. Traditions/objects don"t just dictate one specific fact, use both conscious and unconscious to give a greater understanding. That understanding is both personal and communal--some ppl have deeper/different experiences of it than others. Metaphors, no matter in what medium, give physical forms spiritual meaning.
