10/27 hicks, white, nunavut: inuit self-determination through a land claim and public. Nunavut= our land, born of inuit poli/cult aspirations. Nvt is unique bc 85% of pop is inuit. Tho govt is public, distinct focus on inuit issues. Some argue that nvt should b independent state. But inuit accommodations can fit w/in can state. Nvt/regional agreements could mark new chapter in ways indg ppl gain sovereignty. Saying nvt is dependent on s can is reductive. But, borders show practical compromises of inuit to get statehood. Nvt doesn"t include some areas trad used by inuit, excludes some inuit groups (inuvialuit) Isolation, climate makes for high cost of living (comes from shipping, largely) Fertility rate is almost 6x higher than rest of can, tho birth rate is falling. In decade leading up to creation of nvt, much growth in wage-labour workforce. Nvt has much higher unemployment than rest of can.
