I. cartier"s voyages=best, most detailed account of ne cost/st. lawrence river. Authorship--not sure if cartier himself, nephew, someone else wrote manuscripts. Not much info on cartier himself--most comes from the voyages. He prob had good knowledge of the americas. Faith had elements of mysticism, as was common (sim to na) Mysticism, along w/ poor eur. technology/knowledge, likely imbued cartier+crew w/ sense of fear upon coming to america. Iii. naming natural elements made na seem more familiar. Sometimes couldn"t come up w/ names (belugas) This drawing of similarities manifests as c"s v. deliberate descriptions. Language barrier btwn 2 sides adds complexity. Even when translators were present, eur languages lacked words to express many na concepts. Iv. cartier arrived w/ some familiarity w/ indg people. Howev, he was fearful/mistrustful, even thru numerous hospitable greetings. Rejected initial trade propositions, later accepted by was wary. Indg people had likely come into contact w/+traded w/ other eurs b4.
