Exercise of reason in choice of means. In this manner accommodates religious and national yearnings. American democracy is adaptive, but will not come to favor the rational over the irrational or vice-versa. America adopted its ideology before its big population boom democracy before democrats. Ghosts of war still linger in europe, shape post-war mentality. Now have hugely emotional national and social movements waiting for an outlet. Pre-war european mentality one of steady progress towards industrialization and democracy (enlightenment) Would seem that militarism, class conflict, and nationalism should slowly disappear peacefully. But war interrupted this, causing revolutions/nationalism, political strife, economic downturn. Must get back to pre-war mentality or be stuck in nationalist/social conflicts forever. Need to bring american mindset to europe in order to redirect the course of the continent. End result should be some kind of united states of europe. Prewar poland had nascent republic/democracy in its upper class.
