HIST 249 Chapter Notes - Chapter Reading: Rudolf Virchow, The Communist Manifesto, Louis Pasteur
Document Summary
The later half of the 19th century was characterized by exploration and change of the physical and intellectual. The communist manifesto and origin of species by darwin and marx had an enormous influence and impact. They epitomized the intellectual reform and social and scientific revolution. There were expeditions to remote regions - tropical and polar, high altitudes or bathysphere depths. This happened while there were explorations into the new microscope and atomic words. Techniques and instruments revealed the mechanisms of living material and promoted investigation into the cause of disease. The use of the microscope played a huge part in developing and supporting concepts of the abnormal structure and function. Theodor schwan and jacob schleiden emphasized that living matter was composed of units called cells. Cell theory was elaborated into the theory of disease by rudolf virchow. He said that all cells originated from cells and that all diseases were because of diseases in the cells.
