09/29 petit, breeders, workers and mothers: gender and the congressional literacy test. Literacy tests prevented southern/eastern eur immigrants from voting. Thought that these immigrants were undesirable, a different race--down to the blood. Howev, gender ideologies just as important as racial ones. During the 1800s, conceptions of class, race, gender were being reformed. White mens" ability to work and provide for families/women"s to stay @ home and care for children bcame prised qualities. Allowed one to look down upon aas, poorer classes. These upper class white women were typically ones pushing for suffrage. Aas over sexualized--men seen as a threat (espc to white women), women sexually abused. Mechanization was changing nature of work/to what extent a man could control his work. Women"s" aspirations of middle class, white collar jobs changed feminine ideal. These two were gendered--racial stereotypes re: chinese. Scapegoating of eastern/southern eur immigrants also drove legislation. This group also gendered, perceived as threat to amer man/womanhood.
