Document Summary

The hunting and herding people of southern africa remained isolated from the wider world until the end of the 15th century. Throughout the century, the portuguese were pushing further and further from europe along the western coast of the african continent. Eventually in 1487, bartholomeu dias"s expedition anchored in mossel bay before returning to lisbon. In 1497 vasco de gama led another expedition that rounded the cape before he went back to portugal. These travels were longer, more hazardous and more rewarding that the crossing of the atlantic ocean. During the 16th century the portuguese government sent fleets to the cape of good hope. In east africa they built forts in mombasa and mozambique. They were lured by gold in what now is known as zimbabwe so they created garrison towns on the zambezi river and established trading posts in the area.
