23 views2 pages

Document Summary

Homelands collapsed formally around 20 years ago. The homeland policy changed through the years and was implemented slowly, unevenly and incompletely. It took 25 years from the passing of the bantu authorities act in 1951 to transkei independence in. Most homelands never achieved full spatial consolidation and their constituent parts were interspersed with white owned farming areas and small towns. Many homeland residents worked for long periods outside their boundaries. The homelands were seen as the most oppressed zones with housed the most impoverished people. There were limits of incorporation into white dominated society and limits of social transformation. In mpondoland, people largely spoke their own language and had a self-assurance about their society and culture, whether traditionalists or christians. Most people remained firmly committed to their customary forms of land holding and the rural self-built dwellings were both distinct and aesthetically fascinating.
