INTD 397 Chapter Notes - Chapter Microfinance: Structural Inequality, Naila Kabeer, Financial Services
Document Summary
Naila kabeer: gender and power within households. Intra-household decision making = indicator of women"s empowerment. There may be evidence saying microfinance helped intra-household decision making of women, but not in all circumstances. Usually the wives of loan holders do not have much say in where the loan is spent. Explored four different categories of decision-making: women dominated decision making, men dominated, norm following decision making and bargaining over decisions. Found that channelling loans through women"s groups rather than to individuals increased the likelihood of female decision-making and bargaining with male and norm- following: ex. Loan use, money management, time and task allocation, etc. Findings show that group-based lending to women have a greater effect on intra-household decision making that individual lending. Also the strategy used in groups (i. e. frequency of meetings, investment, and intensity of training) affects the decision making more than the actual duration of group membership itself.
