JWST 382 Chapter Notes - Chapter 03-07: Public Humiliation
Document Summary
Racial issues not resolved in the bible, not resolved today. God created only one kind of man. Racism is unreligious in that it denies dignity of all ppl. White man needs to excise racism from himself. Public humiliation of whites as symbol of oppression. Public humiliation worse than sin in relig perspective--can"t take it back/atone for it. Can no longer justify inaction re: discrimination of blacks. Extenuate responsibility--unable to imagine what alternate, better conditions would look like, thus make abuses seem less terrible. Keep blacks out of sight, use segregation to prevent need to show love. Point to progress made, change has occurred, but things r def not right. Delegate responsibility to courts, justice seen as judicial responsibility, justice syst can b exploited/is not infallible. Cultivate indifference, indifference to evil is just as bad as evil itself. Dedicate minds to more sublime issues, argument that relig figures r not concerned w social problems. Equality as relig commandment necessitates personal involvement.
