We learned about logic in the sixth and fifth chapters. We learned in the third chapter about the structure of constituency analysis. > we will now be bringing these things together. We will see that, in certain cases, we will retain this hypothesis. In other cases, we will reject part of the hypothesis. Part of what we want to do in this chapter is getting used to reasoning about things from a linguistic point of view. You put forth a hypothesis, then you see what kinds of things follow from it, and you see whether or not the things that follow fit with your observations about language. There will be certain things, which, once we assume the word and in english works like (cid:1165), implies certain things about how and ought to behave.
